THE INNOVATOR

Fred Leavitt is the founder of Vulcan Grills LLC and the inventor of the Self Powered Smoker. He has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Alberta in Materials Engineering and a Master’s of Science from the University of California San Diego in Electrical Engineering. He has spent his entire career involved in power supplies, primarily thermoelectric technology and batteries, leading projects for most of the government agencies including the DOD, DOE, NASA, NSF, DARPA, EPA, DOT and CEC. He has twelve registered patents and several patents pending.

Fred grew up in a small town in Southern Alberta in a home that was heated entirely by a wood burning furnace in the home's basement. It was only natural that as his thermoelectric career advanced, Fred’s thoughts would often turn to ways that he could use his thermoelectric experience to allow wood burning appliances, such as wood pellet smokers, to produce electrical power, eliminating the need to access an electrical outlet or recharge batteries.
